Types of Residential Roofing

While there are a ton of residential roofing options to consider, we most often see five common materials: ceramic roofing tiles, wood shakes, metal roofing, slate roof shingles, and asphalt shingles. Each have their own benefits awarded to them, but some are probably more applicable to your home than others. Starting with ceramic roofing tiles, this is an option that adds a lot of character and personality to your home that can last about 50 years. However, ceramic tiles are not completely durable when set up against fluctuating weather and we do not typically recommend this option here in Denver. Wood shakes are reliable and durable under many types of conditions, while offering an eco-friendlier option than others you might consider (when harvested from recycled wood or through sustainable practices). Additionally, wood shakes can be very energy efficient through its natural insulation ability.

The next common option, metal roofing, can last around 50 years and are extremely low maintenance as they tend to make ice and snow slide off easily on their own. While they are one of the lightest options available, some homeowners do not like the noise they create during storms. Slate roof shingles, on the other hand, look very natural and are super durable – lasting around 100 years! Although this is one of the more expensive options to install and repair, it will not rot and is easy to maintain. Lastly, asphalt shingles are the most common option we see across the nation due to its cheap and easy installment. There are a seemingly endless array of color and style options, but only tend to last about 20 years.

Maintenance of Residential Roofs in Denver

The type of roof you have will depend on the extent of the maintenance you are able to provide. For example, we do not typically recommend homeowners provide the maintenance for their slate roof shingles as they are easily broken and complicated to work around. For the most part, however, there are some regular maintenance steps that most people can do on a routine basis in order to extend the life of their Denver roof. Off of the roof itself, homeowners can trim any overhanging branches of nearby trees and frequently check the attic for any signs of leaks. These maintenance aspects are just as important as physically inspecting the roof itself!

If you decide to perform a visual inspection of your roof yourself, ensure you are taking all the necessary safety precautions possible: securing a ladder at a slant, wearing proper shoes, etc. Once on the roof, inspect for any shingle damage or missing shingles. If possible, remove any debris from your roof to relieve the pressure from it. A good way to know if it is time for your roof to be professionally cleaned is if you start to see streaks on your roof – these “streaks” are typically algae and fungus that can break down the roof materials over time, so it is important to clean it off as soon as you can. Hiring a professional roof cleaning company is yet another way to clear the moss and algae from your roof in order to maximize its longevity.

Choose an Experienced Denver Roofing Contractor

When preparing to choose a roofing company, there are some things you should be certain of first. A reputable company will be able to provide past testimonials and present all the proper insurance coverage to cover you, the homeowner, in the case of an accident while employees are on your property. Professionals should provide their own bins to haul away your old roof, and adequate coverings for your landscaping to ensure they are not harmed during the roof installation process. They will never cut corners and should follow national standards.

Our employees are covered with complete liability and worker’s compensation insurance and are some of the most knowledgeable experts in the roofing industry due to our ongoing training programs.
